Gill was brought up first in Australia and then on the south coast near Porstmouth. She first tried gliding at Lee-on-Solent where her brother Graham was an instructor. At University however she preferred squash, and then when working in London, she enjoyed rowing and competed for three years.
Finally she enrolled on a gliding course in 1985 and was hooked from the first day and within 12 months was flying her first competition . With her husband Brian, also a past gliding World Champion, the next 23 years were spent travelling Europe and then further afield running The European Soaring Club - a roaming gliding club for the more adventurous pilot. Now they are settled in Central France.
