George Metcalfe

George has been a devotee of gliding and competitions for many years. He began gliding in 1976, entered and won his first regionals in 1979, and has flown UK Nationals every year since, having now occupied almost every position on the final results sheets! He has also flown extensively in Europe, including expeditions to the French and Austrian Alps, mountain and flat-land comps in France and Spain, and the Trans-European race in Netherlands and Germany.

As an instructor and regional examiner, George was a member of the BGA Instructors Committee, and also was active in the management of his home club (Lasham), for 5 years as the club chairman. He is a Trustee of the Ted Lysakowski Memorial Trust.

Away from gliding, George is a Chartered Engineer working in the IT Services industry.

George and his wife Jane met through gliding. They have two sons, both of whom have sampled soaring flight, enjoyed it, and are looking forward to their 16th birthdays!
