2009 European Championships, Nitra, Slovakia

Slovakia, Day Scrubbed, Brits Celebrate

It has been raining all morning, and sadly the day was scrubbed at the midday brief. However, comma, this means that, subject to any protests by 2130 tonight, the GB Team will win the Open Class with Pete Harvey  as European Champion for the third time, Steve Jones as third and Ed Johnston 5th.  Russell Cheetham will be European Champion in the 18m Class with Mike Young second, and in the 15m Class Leigh wells finishes 4th with Tim Scott, 9th. This strength in depth of the team means that we are in with a good chance of the team trophy also.

Slovakia Last day, Gridding and Briefing Delayed

As expected, the weather is overcast today with rain on the way, so we have to wait for briefing at 1200. The Team would be devastated if we did not fly a task today.........

Slovakia Day 9, All Back, results pending

All our pilots got safely on the ground before a very heavy shower hit the airfield, resulting in some soggy derigging and soggier crew. Results slow to come in , but it looks like Mike Young and Russell will be retain  the front  slots in the 18m class, while we have to wait to see whether XXL, who started 14 min after Pete, Steve and Ed, has done enough to claw back enough points  to lead the Open Class. Results are not yet available for the 15m boys, but they appear to have done well in the very difficult conditions today, finishing up with the hunt.

Slovakia Day 9 Difficult Finish

After 4 hrs on task many are struggling to finish, with showers popping in the area, and news of some outlandings trickling in. It is going to be close in all classes.

Slovakia Day 9, The Race is on!

All are well en route under a very good sky, with the occasional discrete shower developing near Nitra. There was a lot of tactical jostling at the start with the main threat  Frenchman XXL (aka Boris's shirt size) to the Open Class leaders  Pete Harvey and Steve Jones starting some 14 min after him, hoping to catch up at least the 25 pts he needs to get into 2nd place overall. However, he underestimates the cunning of our boys. Also we have Ed Johnston in 5th place coming up fast.

Slovakia Day 9 Showdown

With tomorrow's weather looking decidedly shakey, today could well be the last day, so the pressure is on those behind the Brits in the Open and 18m to beat our boys on what promises to be a good racing day today, with brisk winds and streeting already evident. All are gridded for a launch in a few minutes at 1100. The tasks are 378 km for the Open Class, which is behind the 18m  class (386km) on the grid, and the 15m class on their own grid have 359 km. The task area is generally to the east and north of Nitra. Nail biting stuff!

Slovakia Day 9 Scrub Weds

After a short grid squat and a couple of sniffer samplings, it became clear that the day would be unflyable for the comp, with  all cu disappearing under a very grey sky, and relentless strong westerly wind. Roll on tomorrow.

Slovakia, Day 9, On the Grid for short AAT tasks

The weather is overcast with scattered cu, but still  a westerly 20 kt wind. All AAT tasks of 2hrs, and all classes going generally north and east. First launch 1230.
