12/08 - Day 2 dawned (finally) with the Met Man (Bernd) issuing a "fatwa" against a certain member of the British Team crew for alleged dealings with his daughters. The shotgun was mentioned but thankfully it was all a massive missunderstanding (probably).
So, we flew and it was pretty hard work for all concerned. The Club Class had a 2.5hr AAT to the south and then up to the east, with the Standards having a 2hr with the same 1st sector and a similar eastern 2nd sector.
The weather looked challenging with varied amounts of Cu and a strengthening westerly forming some wave over the top.
Matt, Andy and Luke started pretty much together and initially called good climbs towards the first sector. It seemed to get harder after that (boing!) but they pressed on regardless and followed their sage coach's advice to make sure they finished above everything else. Matt eventually coming home 5 mins over time at 65kph for 9th place (only 100pts off 1st) with Andy 16th and Luke 20th but all of them pretty close points-wise as the day was significantly devalued. There were only 25 finishers out of 44 so a great job all around.
The Standards probably had a harder time (again!) than the Clubs as they were launched later into a slightly worse sky. Tom had a difficult time at the start and it took him a while to get into a position to go. Meanwhile Oli and Will started together and set off into a not-so-great-sky. Tom started about 30mins after the other two but unfortunately landed out 60km down track on the first leg. It's fair to say we were all gutted for him when the call came in but there was mild consolation in that he was not the only Standard Class pilot to struggle on that leg and especially since he was on his own. Oli and Will definitely made the best they could of the conditions finishing 14th and 18th respectively with only 21 finishers.
We have had 2 team birthdays in the last 2 days - Matt was 21 yesterday and Will 24 today. Both were suitably christened with a dip in the Swiss pool and most of the rest of the team seemed to get a good soaking too.
Later we ate in a brewery-cum-dance_studio-cum-nightclub place, the kind you would only find in Germany..... Having forgot to have a mullet haircut and 'tache combo we felt massively out of place but ate and drank well regardless.
Tomorrow looks interesting and couldbe flyable if this cold-front moves though.
Catch you later.
