Szeged Scrub Final Day - Team GB settles for 2 Silver Medals

The thunderstorm warning caused a rapid derig and the rain has just arrived. So the Worlds 2010 are over and the Team GB have won two Silver Medals : Steve Jones in his Nimbus 4 in the Open Class, and Leigh Wells in his ASG29 in the 15m Class. Warm congratulations to both of them, and to the whole team for a job well done.  Prize giving is tomorrow morning, when we will also hear about the Team Cup, in which we must be in with a chance of a medal. A fuller report will follow. Meanwhile, the full results are available through the link on the right.

Szeged 6 August Last Day Thunderstorm Warning

All are gridded, and Task C has just been issued for the Open and 18m Classes. A decision will be made at 1115local about whether to launch some or all of the classes. There is a high risk of very heavy storms with hail later in the day. The Italians have been doing a rain dance and/or bribing the met manto keep their 15m class lead.

Szeged 5 August - Most of the 15m and 18m land out, Open Class boys do well

The day died while our chaps were struggling home along with most of their competitors. In particular, Leigh  Wells got within sight of base, but had to land out, only to see at least one of the Italians finish in their Dianas. This means that he will be knocked off the top spot, but we will not know the full result until later. He is now in a field away from roads, where a carry out may be necessary. Similarly, our 18m boys got shot down north east of Szeged, along with a large number of their class.

Szeged 5 August - First arrivals after a tricky day

A layer of upper cloud tha covered this area has just cleared off north, but into the track of the 15m and 18m classes. The Open Class pair have just landed, from their final area to the south, and the 18m pair are stuck in dead air to the NW of Szeged, where Tim has already landed out. Leigh appears to be still airborne, but out of contact.

Szeged 5 August - They are off!

All classes have started in conditions that are quite British. Lots of cloud, base variable but not much over 3000ft, and with top cover over this area for the next 2 hrs. All that practice at home may just pay off....

The International Night went well last evening, and our offering of Pimms at the door went down particularly well. Tonight we have our traditional BBQ with the Dutch Team.

Szeged 5 August -15m and 18m retasked

Launching is in progress for the Open Class, on their original Task A , an AAT of 3hrs30 min 283/max 467km, going south into Serbia, then north towards Budapest, then South to Serbia again. The 15m and 18m both now have shorter racing tasks, of 294 and 289km respectively, and in the area of expected relatively better weather to the west, north and east of Szeged, with the 15m gingerly putting their noses into Sebia for 20 km. I have finally worked out the code here. The tasker sets the task, the weatherman then gives his opinion, and the task changes. Simples!

Szeged 5 August - Over Optimistic Tasking

All classes have long tasks today of 400km plus, despite a fairly mediocre weather forecast, and Tasks C are already being prepared. The Open Class are tasked into Serbia, and the other classes to the west, north and then east. The campaign to get the 15m class to land in Roumania seems to continue with their A and B tasks taking them a long way east. This is a big day for the team, as it may well be the last comp day, with a front approaching tomorrow.

Szeged 4 August - Leigh retakes lead in 15m

Leigh Wells has retaken a narrow lead of 7 points over 2 Italian Dianas today, by putting in a sterling performance in the 2hr AAT, coming 3rd for the day. His teammate, Tim Scott finished down the field, but gave very good mutual support on a tricky day. The 15m class is now heading for a nail biting finale, especially as the weather is uncertain over the remaining 2 contest days. The Open and 18m boys had a day kicking their heels.

Szeged 4 August 15m going well

Our 2 boys, Leigh and Tim started in the middle of the field and are making good progress in the second area before turning for the control pt and home. The sky looks good, but the speed will not be too fast for the day, and this may not suit the Diana just ahead of Leigh in the overall 15m rankings..

Szeged 4 August Open and 18m scrub, 15m AAT (again)

Although it is distinctly brightening up, the big boys have been scrubbed for the day, and the 15m class (also known as guinea pigs for their cross border experimental excursions) are just being gridded for a 1400hrs launch on a 2hr AAT to the west and north., staying mainly in Hungary for a change.  For those officianados who note that there has been an excess of AATs for this class, the organisers are pointing out the "should not exceed 67%" subtlety of the Annex A to the FAI Code.
