Rocketing to Success 23rd August 2007

Now that the 2007 international season is over, it's time to say a big thank you to all the sponsors, especially Rocket Software, who have helped us to achieve our successes - 2 Women's World Champions, a European Champion, a bronze medal and numerous other fantastic efforts from all the team members. Yet again Great Britain remains the no. 1 ranked team in the World at gliding.
Let's hope that the Grand Prix in December and the World Championships in 2008 bring us more success!

The British Coaching Squad would like to invite applications for this year’s development training. The dates of the Development Training will be 16th-22nd April and 23rd – 29th April based in Ontur, and requires one week’s participation. The training is run by members of the Senior Coaching Squad and provides an enormous opportunity to train with Britain’s most experienced world championship pilots.

Neil Lawson 15th August 2005
The accident at Husbands Bosworth in which Neil Lawson was killed is a tragedy that has affected all the British Gliding Team members. Neil was a very important part of our team and a good personal friend to many of the team members. Neil was crew during the Club Class World Championships in Norway in 2004 and Team Captain for the European team at Nitra this year.
His contribution in many areas of the team's activities and the superb photos he has taken of the team and its activities will be our lasting memory of Neil.
Neil was an only child and it is impossible for us to imagine the grief and sorrow his family must feel, our thoughts are with them in this very sad time.
The time will soon come when this tragedy is better understood and we can find some way to ensure that Neils presence within the team and in gliding is not forgotten.

Brtish Gliding Team Manager.

Junior World Championships 1st August 2005
The British Juniors have arrived at Husbands Bosworth, and the rest of the teams are trickling in. Today was the first unofficial practice day, with most teams opting for local flying due to poor soaring conditions. The Brits took to the air to do some filming for local telelvision (keep your eyes open over the next couple of days). German pilot Christof Nacke kindly extolled the virtues of the British Team for the cameras!

Slovakian Silver 23rd July 2005
The British Team continued it's recent international success with Andy Davis MBE adding another medal to the three won in Finland, confirming the UK's place as the No.1 gliding team. Due to a small weather window, the last day only saw short 2 hour tasks in each group.
Going into the last day, Andy was third with just 23 points between second and 5th places. A steady 9th place yesterday was enough to move up to the Silver Medal position overall - teammate Jez managed 4th for the day, picking him up to 21st overall. The rest of the team also had a good day, with former World Champion, Steve Jones, winning the 18 metre task and brother Phil coming 3rd for the day. Overall, Steve was 9th and Phil a very respectable 5th. Jay and Owain in the Club Class ended with 3rd and 4th, leaving them 21st and 15th overall.

In the 15 metre class, Leigh Wells has won a well deserved Bronze medal against some tough opposition.

Mixed Weather in Finland and Slovakia 15th July 2005
For the second time in Finland, the Open Class lads took all three top spots in yesterday's 339km task, with Russell edging a minute ahead of Pete and Kim for a day win. With just two contest days left, Pete is in first place, 132 points ahead of Russell, who is 95 points ahead of Reinhard Schramme of Germany. In the 15 Metre Class, Leigh Wells came joint second for the day - a number of landouts by those above him allowed him to jump to third place overall.
In Slovakia, where the weather has not been so favourable, the Standard Class was a non-contest day as a storm stopped enough pilots from passing the 100 kilometre mark. In the Club Class, Jay and Owain were close to the pace with 13th and 16th places, while in the 18 metre class Steve and Phil Jones managed 3rd and 5th places, leaving Phil second overall - just 17 points off the lead.
